When one thinks of the Amalfi region, the image of vibrant lemons and the scenic Italian coast often come to mind. Instagrammers documenting their Italian getaways inevitably include lemon emojis or don lemon-printed sundresses. Despite anticipating these clichés, I was still taken aback by the sheer abundance of yellow and lemon-themed memorabilia that greeted me in Positano.

Lemon artwork immediately illustrated the prominence of Positano’s lemons and limoncello. With humble beginnings along the Amalfi coast, limoncello is a globally acclaimed Italian liqueur. Traditionally consumed as a digestif, limoncello is typically served after dinner as a form of dessert.
To learn more about the prominence of Positano’s limoncello, I followed my nose and left it to the experts. Perched in the middle of Via dei Mulini, Sapori e Profumi di Positano boasts a sweet citrus aroma that wafts through the streets of the seaside town. The irresistible scent invites customers inside to taste their traditional lemon candies and liqueurs and peruse an assortment of soaps and ceramics.

Sapori e Profumi di Positano, one of Positano’s first limoncello shops and factories, started with love – or a love story, to be more exact. In 1986, Sandra, a visitor from Northern Italy, found herself enthralled by Positano and a handsome local named Paolo. The pair quickly fell in love and remain together to this day. At the beginning of their love story, Paolo owned and nurtured 300 lemon trees. This fascinated Sandra and inspired her to experiment with using the peels to create a drink that “would become unique in her world.” This drink turned out to be limoncello, and the couple still proudly produces and sells it to Positano patrons every day.

Sapori e Profumi di Positano’s limoncello starts simply with Everclear alcohol and lemon zest. The shop’s printable handout explains the importance of choosing thick-skinned lemons for the best results.
“Our limoncello is 100% natural. Sugar, lemon peels, and alcohol. It’s pure alcohol, the recipe is original and natural. This is important, and what makes us special.”
The Positano shop prides itself on its organic intentions. Their recipe only uses “Sfusato Amalfitano” lemons grown in their garden with zero pesticides. These lemons are then stripped so the rind peelings can be placed in a large container with the Everclear to soak for seven days. On day eight, the mixture is strained and the peels are discarded before adding a simple syrup made on the stovetop from water and granulated sugar.

From gelato to cocktails, limoncello fans can now enjoy the flavor in a variety of ways. Competing with Aperol and Hugo spritzes across the country, the Limoncello Spritz has gained popularity due to its beloved bitter and bubbly combination. Made with limoncello, prosecco, and club soda, the summer cocktail can be ordered in various parts of Italy, including Positano.
When selecting a limoncello liqueur to drink after dinner or to make a summer spritz, it is important to prioritize quality producers to ensure an authentic tasting experience. Remembering limoncello’s Amalfi roots remains critical to preserving its Italian taste and tradition.
