Within the sphere of mixology, certain names resonate with the rich timbre of tradition and refinement. Angostura stands prominently among them, its origins rooted deeply in the heritage of Trinidad and Tobago. The story began with Dr. Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert, a German physician, who, in the early 19th century, embarked on a mission to create a medicinal tonic. His experimentation resulted in the creation of Angostura aromatic bitters, a concoction rich in a mélange of herbs, spices, and botanicals. By 1824, the winds of change carried the Siegert family to Trinidad, opening a new chapter for Angostura, which quickly ingrained itself into the island’s culinary and social fabric. Operating under the name J.G.B. Siegert & Sons, the company flourished, broadening its range and imprinting its legacy on the spirits industry.

Its fame, beyond its distinctive flavor profile, is tied to an interesting quirk: its label is notably larger than the bottle itself. When the product began to be exported from its home on the small island of Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean, the family-run company misjudged the sizing of the bottle and label. The result was an oversized label. Nevertheless, the product was launched as is and received considerable acclaim for its distinctive ‘design.’ Encouraged by the positive feedback, the family chose to maintain the oversized label, which has since become an iconic feature of the brand.

The tale of Angostura is one of evolution and excellence, with its signature oversized label becoming an emblem of its rich history. Events such as the annual Angostura Global Cocktail Challenge are a testament to its enduring influence in the world of mixology. Angostura’s saga is a testament to enduring artistry and passion. Each bottle holds not just a spirit but a vessel of the legacy and cultural heritage that have enshrined it as a cornerstone of cocktail creation around the globe.
